Networking for Big Data: Landmark SC19 Demo Shows High-Performance Delivery of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Data with NDN

edmund yeh

The multi-university (Northeastern, Caltech, and Colorado State) research SANDIE team led by ECE Professor Edmund Yeh has finished a landmark demo at SC19 in Denver. The team showed that Named Data Networking (NDN) can deliver Large Hadron Collider (LHC) high energy physics (HEP) data over a transcontinental testbed at over 6.7 Gbps over a single thread. The team also showed that its optimized caching and forwarding algorithms can decrease download times by a factor of 10. The demo points to the promise of data-centric networking architectures and algorithms for dramatically enhancing the performance of large-scale data-intensive science and engineering applications.
