Tech that Detects Cause of Preemie Blindness gets Federal Nod

ECE Professor Deniz Erdogmus’s work with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) was featured in article “Tech that detects cause of preemie blindness gets federal nod“. Their team, which is funded by NIH and NSF, developed various algorithms to automatically diagnose and assess the severity of Retinopathy of PRematurity – a retina condition in prematurely born babies, which can be treated if detected but leads to blindness otherwise.  16,000 premature infants in the U.S. are effected by the disorder annually. The artificial intelligence algorithm, named the i-ROP DL system, has been granted breakthrough status by the FDA. The FDA Breakthrough Device Program aims to accelerate development – and potentially approval – of medical devices for “more effective treatment or diagnosis of life-threatening or irreversibly debilitating diseases.”
