Restuccia Receives DARPA Young Faculty Award to Study Resilient AI in Autonomous Systems

ECE Assistant Professor Francesco Restuccia received a Young Faculty Award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) that will provide research funding for “RADAR: Resource-Aware Dynamic Adaptation for Resilient DNNs in Low-SWaP Tactical Systems.”

Abstract

Autonomous mobile systems with strict size, weight, and power constraints increasingly need on-device AI based on neural networks for real-time perception and situational awareness. On the other hand, existing neural networks are not resilient to intentional and unintentional perturbations. The RADAR project proposes to address this long-standing issue with new techniques that will allow the deployed neural networks to be protected against perturbations throughreal-time fine-grained reconfiguration.
