New Engineering Academic Programs
Northeastern’s College of Engineering has added several new degree programs including a BS in Electrical Engineering and Music, a BS in Environmental Engineering and Health Sciences, a BS/JD in Mechanical Engineering and Law 3+3, a BS/MS in Environmental Engineering, and an MS in Robotics as well as minors in Healthcare Systems Operations and Robotics.

DARPA Funding Announced for Professor Kaeli
COE Distinguished Professor David Kaeli has received a 3-year $753K DARPA Software-Defined Hardware TA-2 grant titled “Mitchell,” as part of a 3-partner team that includes Systems Technology Research and Purdue University.

MIE/ECE Faculty Awarded $1.5M AFRL Grant
MIE/ECE Assistant Professor Jose Martinez-Lorenzo, ECE Professor Tommaso Melodia, ECE Professor Kaushik Chowdhury, ECE/MIE Professor Hanumant Singh, and CCIS/ECE Affiliated Faculty Chris Amato were awarded a $1.5M Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) grant for “Robust Decentralized Classification and Coordination Algorithms for Swarms of SUAS.”

Associate Professor Fu Given Samsung GRO Award
ECE/CCIS Associate Professor Dr. Yun Raymond Fu won the Samsung 2018 GRO award from the SAMSUNG Global Research Outreach (GRO) Program. He will receive $100,000 to support his research on developing Commonsenseness Guided Deep Learning System. Dr. Fu is the directior of the Northeastern SmileLab.

Associate Professor Fu Named OSA Fellow
ECE/CCIS Associate Professor Yun Raymond Fu has been named a fellow of The Optical Society (OSA). Fu was recognized “for outstanding and sustained achievements in image & video processing, optical pattern recognition, imaging & sensing,” according to OSA President Ian Walmsley. The department is happy to offer congratulations to Professor Fu.

Designing the Next Generation of Flying Robots
ECE Assistant Professor Alireza Ramezani studied the flight movements of bats to build a robotic Bat Bot that has more maneuverability than drones and would be good for surveillance of traffic patterns or airport security.
